밝은 방은 롤랑 바르트가 쓴 저서 「밝은 방」으로부터 비롯되었다. 빛을 기록한 이미지, 즉 사진에 관한 본질적인 사유를 담은 책 전체가 작가에게는 푼크툼(punctum)을 촉발하는 하나의 이미지처럼 다가왔다. 그 이면에는 분명 암실이 아니라 밝은 방에서 피어오르는 상을 보았던 경험과 연결되어 있을 것이다. 이 작업에서 염전은 이미지를 창조하는 장이자, 물질을 생산하는 곳으로 기능한다. 느리고 수공적인 3D이미지 제작 과정을 염판위에서 소금꽃이 만들어내는 비정형 이미지와 대응시키며, 디지털 화면을 구성하는 기본 단위인 픽셀(pixel)과 소금(sel)의 관계를 탐구한다.

The Bright Room takes its name from Roland Barthes’ book Camera Lucida. For the artist, the entire book—filled with profound reflections on photographs as images that record light—appeared like a single image that triggers a punctum. Underlying this is likely the artist’s own experience of seeing an image emerge not in a darkroom, but in a bright one. In this work, the salt field functions both as a site of image creation and material production. The slow, handcrafted process of 3D image-making is juxtaposed with the amorphous images formed by blooming salt crystals on the salt pans, exploring the relationship between pixel—the basic unit of a digital screen—and sel (salt).
